How Does a Gradebook Calculator Work?
A gradebook calculator helps you track your overall course grade by combining multiple assignments. Depending on your syllabus, your class will use either a points-based system or a weighted system.
How to Calculate a Grade Using Points
In a points system, simply add up all the points you have earned and divide them by the total possible points.
(Total Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible) × 100
Example:
- Homework: 18 / 20
- Quiz: 42 / 50
Total: 60 / 70
60 ÷ 70 × 100 = 85.71% (B)
How to Calculate a Weighted Grade
In a weighted system, categories (like Homework or Exams) are worth a specific percentage of your final grade.
Category Grade × Category Weight = Contribution
Example:
- Homework: 90% (worth 20%) → 18%
- Quizzes: 85% (worth 20%) → 17%
- Tests: 82% (worth 30%) → 24.6%
Completed contribution: 59.6%
Completed weight: 70%
Current normalized grade:
59.6 ÷ 70 × 100 = 85.14% (B)
Note: This differentiates your current grade from your final course grade, assuming you still have 30% of the course left to complete.

How can I predict my final grade?

Should ungraded assignments count as zero?
No. A blank or ungraded assignment means you have not received a score yet. If you enter a "0", it will drag down your current grade significantly. Only enter a zero if you actually received a zero.
What is the difference between weighted and points-based?
In points-based, every point is equal, no matter the assignment. In weighted grades, a 10-point quiz might be worth 10% of your grade, while a 100-point homework category might only be worth 5%. Check your syllabus to know which one your teacher uses.
What grade do I need to reach an A?
Enter your current grades into the Weighted mode. Then, use the Target Final Grade tool. Enter "90" (or your school's A threshold) to see exactly what you need to score on the remaining assignments to achieve that grade.
